Playtime
Oct 15, 2019
A group of artist’s (both local and ex-locals) have come together (again) to explore how materials, ideas and processes of their particular artistic bents, could explore the idea of play versus work time.
Inspired by Jacques Tati’s 1967 film PlayTime, the group considers how day to day routine defeats and obstructs our natural selves.
This exhibition is the second at the Northern Centre of Contemporary Arts for this specific bunch.
Their show, ‘Officeworks’ in September of last year was critically successful in reception and a highlight on the NCCA calendar with Chief Minister, Michael Gunner using the gallery space to announce increased funding to the arts, which has seen the on-going Darwin CBD mural and beautification projects.
The show brings together the mobs’ collective pursuit to bring art making and ark works back to a place of familiarity and everyday relevance. The works on show display the enjoyment in the play with and use of an array of objects, mediums and resources that consider and fool around with how playfulness can reassert itself over a serious approach towards artmaking.
The line-up headed up by (and in alphabetical order) internationally recognized, award winning poet, Christian Bök, with local go-to artist/problem solver Bill Davies, paperman Stuart Gluth, along with the grown up of the group - Christian Clare Robertson and ring-in Nicky Sanders with Kaye Strange along for the ride! This year also sees the debut of two guest stars, both recent graduates of CDU, Jane Anderson and Johanna Funk.
