North

In June 2014, six Sydney artists were invited to travel north to Darwin to meet with artists, curators, and arts organisations in order to share in the cultural and geographic diversity between Australia's northern and eastern states. North is the result of this journey, an exhibition that presents six varying responses to the cultural, economic and human history of Darwin, reimagined – indeed, for some of the artists, seen for the first time – through the eyes of strangers.

North is presented by the SYD/DRW Project, an ongoing venture which aims to foster creative collaboration between Sydney and Darwin-based arts organisations and artists. North features the work of Sydney-based artists Harriet Body, Belem Lett, Stella Rosa McDonald, Siân McIntyre, Peter Nelson, and Paul Williams.

The exhibition titled The SYD/DRW Project is an exhibition exchange project between emerging artists in Sydney and Darwin. This is a multi-dimensional project which seeks to engage emerging artists from Australia's largest city (Sydney) and from its northernmost capital (Darwin). As Harriet explains, the exhibition is 'about creating sustained professional relationships and/or collaborations between Sydney and Darwin artists' Not only does Harriet have a genuine interest in developing Sydney and Darwin's creative relationships, The SYD/DRW Project is also a strategic move for Harriet to achieve recognition in Darwin and thus propel her towards her original goal of situating herself as a Sydney and Darwin based artist.

Limits of Movement

As a Darwin bred, Sydney-based artist my broader intention in this exhibition is to create dynamic exchanges and exciting partnerships between emerging artists in Sydney and Darwin and to invite each community to innovate outside of their geographical and conceptual comfort zones.

The Limits of Movement looks at the varied ways contemporary artists are abstracting notions of performativity through their work and reflects upon the cultural factors that are at play in this new take on performance.
